When you think of Human Resources, what first comes to mind? often the first thing that comes to mind is the department that handles the people stuff (benefits, disciplinary action, trouble, the bad guy… you get the idea). But if you think about it, the name is about the “humans” who happen to be employees. Everyone is human, but what makes someone a good HR professional? Compassion, leadership, and adaptability. If you are in Human Resources in any sector, you must be passionate about people and possess one or all of these skills to survive. Utmost, HR is for the people, lets not get any confusion here. I will discuss HR for the people over a course of time through other blogs, because it will defiantly need it’s own blog! Human Resources, ah yes the tale as old as time I refer to it as. It is a concept that has been around for a long time. It truly is a vital part of a companies growth. To me, we are the people who embrace ideas, change, growth, opportunity and so on. Human Resources is not a field everyone can do, but if you are in it cheers to us because it is a hell of a ride! The passion about people and ensuring our employees are excelling is definitely what keeps me going.
For a little back story here as this is my first blog, I am an empath which can be considered a good thing, while it can also be considered a fault. As an empathetic person, I truly feel what others feel deeply. To most people, they would find that being a negative thing, but for me I embrace it. I truly find it a wonderful thing that I can go through emotions with people. I could easily go from dancing around in a happy moment, to changing gears instantly to match the tone of the room. Compassion and empathy is a gift, and if you have that consider yourself truly lucky. Lets talk leadership. Leadership is again, something not everyone can do. You really have to dig down deep and think “What does leadership mean to me? Do I have the skills/ability, resources and support I need?”. Let’s put it this way. When you think of a previous boss, leader, or mentor in your life, what was it that made them a good leader? Was it their open communication? Was it they were open to new opportunities and assisting you grow into a leader yourself? These are the real questions we need to ask ourselves when we think about “leadership”. Leadership truly starts from the top. I mean the TIPPY TOP of a company. Realistically, if your main “leader” is not supportive to growth or new innovative ideas, why would the rest of the company follow? This my friends, is one of the top reasons why people leave companies. Adaptability; my favorite! this is HR, you must learn to switch gears at any moment. One minute you could be adjusting someone’s benefits while the next moment you might have to mediate a termination. What I have noticed is, never expect to book your whole calendar for the day, because I’ll tell you… you will probably have 54398649 interruptions and then none of the tasks will get done. HR is about adaptability and unfortunately you either get on the ship or the ship sinks. Signing off on my first blog post with this: WE ARE PASSIONATE. WE ARE ADAPTABLE. WE ARE LEADERS. WE ARE HUMAN RESOURCES.
